Start an Internet Research Business
February 1, 2010scfm 13 Comments »For a person or business who can understand and follow links on the internet and use it to pull together helpful business information, an internet research business can be a challenging and rewarding home based business to pursue. An internet researcher can be called upon to do many different types of work. For instance, the internet researcher may be the one to put together lists of the decision makers within businesses. They can help to locate names, addresses, titles, telephone numbers and even preferences which can help your business to prevent many of the drawbacks of ‘cold calling’.
Recruiters can use the information provided by an internet research business to actively pursue employs with the type of experience and education that is necessary for the person in the position. Human resources departments in a business can use the internet researchers work to coordinate in-house recruiting campaigns so that the services of expensive outside consultants and headhunters are not needed.
Internet research businesses can not only find people, but they can also do market research in a particular area. For instance, a firm deciding whether to relocate or to open a branch office in a particular city can make use of an internet researcher in order to capture and summarize needed information about the business and economic climate of the designated area.
Much internet research is done in the course of preparing and presenting information articles and website content. Some businesses hire the research done while others rely on freelance providers to research and write the information needed for advertising copy, content articles and items of interest.
The type of equipment needed to get started in your own internet research business typically includes a computer with high speed internet access, a scanner, CD files, a fax line and a printer as well as a telephone line. Beyond equipment, you will need to develop your own list of useful websites. This is particularly important if you are concentrating on one niche. It’s important that your computer be up to date enough to handle data transmission in either direction.
Doing internet research projects as a business requires that you have the ability to communicate effectively in standard English, that your spelling and grammar skills be above average, that you can identify and correlate details that apply to the research you are conducting and that you can present the materials in a concise and effective manner.

I would start by charging those people you've been helping a small fee. Your time is valuable, too. Make sure that the people you help and are happy with your work know that you're looking to expand your business. Those referrals are your best and least expensive forms of advertisement. If you have Excel or MS Works( usually provided as free software with the purchase of a PC) or some other spreadsheet program, you may already have an invoice program available. Some versions of Quicken also provide invoicing, and bookeeping programs. Very easy to use. For inexpensive business cards and promotional items: Try http://www.vistaprint.com. You can get 250 business cards for the S&H of about $5. Best of Luck!

Do you have any idea how tempting it is to answer this with "if you're asking this question, you can't"? But, sarcasm doesn't translate well to the online world, so….
First, before you start any business, you need to have a market for your goods or services. There needs to be someone out there who is willing to pay cash money for what you have to offer. So, first off, figure out who is willing to pay someone to find answers for them online.
Next, you need to know how to find answers to hard questions online – if the answers were easy, nobody would be willing to pay for them. You need to be able to figure out the right questions to ask at the right places, which is a lot harder than it sounds.
Once you have those two ingredients (people willing to pay you money for answers to questions, and the ability to find the answers to those questions), you're in business.

The requirements vary according to your state. Call the business license office for your county and just ask them if you need a business license to operate an internet store. I live in Georgia, and in my county, you do.

Yahoo Merchant Solutions is the more expensive of two hosted solutions I recommend to my clients. It has everything you need to start an online business, and there's more flexibility with how you configure the online store – the online store tool is more sophisticated than the solution below (Office Live).

The other solution I recommend is Microsoft Office Live Small Business. Office Live is a free service that has an easy to use online web designer tool with templates which allows you to create a website without the need to know how to do HTML/CSS coding. It comes with 500 MB of storage and was designed for small business such as yourself. It is an all-in-one internet toolkit to help give your small business an online presence.
Since it is from a big brand (Microsoft), you can be sure that the right privacy and security policies are in place (unlike many other places on the internet where breach of privacy is quite prevalent). Microsoft is currently offering a free domain name (i.e. yourdomain.com) for the first year. Of course, if you prefer, you can always use the free provided subdomain name.
To accept payment on your Office Live website, you can either use Paypal (free), which is great because you can accept credit cards, or you can try the Store Manager module (paid add-on) for Office Live. Try it out:

Limited liability companies, or LLCs, are becoming more and more popular, and it's easy to see why. The Limited liability Company (LLC) provides the desired limited liability while avoiding some of the drawbacks (like double taxation and excessive paperwork). They combine the personal liability protection of a corporation with the tax benefits and simplicity of a partnership. In addition, they're more flexible and require less on going paperwork than corporations.

You start by writing a business plan, so you know what you're getting into, and whether it will be profitable or not. (sba.gov) You need to think about your target customer segments, pricing for etc. Also consider the information already collected you can re-analyze (census, sba…..there are MANY companies that feed off this info to write e.g. grants, do customer segmentation research etc.). Census does a survey at least one a month if not more (economic indicators, etc.) Good luck!
